How to prepare your first interview with a recruitment consultant

  1. Get a copy of the job description and measure yourself against the exact requirements.
  2. Expect questions related to your experience in issues described in the job description.
  3. Prepare yourself for the question: Tell me about yourself. The ensuing monologue is where you can score points and should be a 3 to 4 minute overview of your career to date and an outline of your character.
  4. Bring pen and paper to the interview and if necessary take notes.
  5. Think of at least six very relevant questions to ask. Learn those questions by heart. Omit questions on remuneration, annual leave, benefits etc.
  6. Find out in advance as much as possible about the company that you are being interviewed by and make sure you have good reasons why you would want to work for this company.
  7. Prepare yourself for the question: what do you think you can contribute to our organisation? Make sure that you have at least 4 good ideas. If this question does not arise then at a relevant moment, take the opportunity to tell the interviewer why you think he should hire you.
  8. Be prepared to sell yourself.
  9. Think of achievements and events that happened where you showed your skills and use these as case studies to show how suitable you are for the position.
  10. If you want the job, let them know that this is the case.
